A rough round of results for the farm this week, but the future of the club was on display. The U14 Monash Monsters got their first points of the season with a 1-1 draw against Mornington, and the U10 side drew 2-2 against Kew.
Monash Juniors
The U14 Monash Monsters took on Mornington on Friday night in Round 3 of the junior season and the second game for Monash. It was a tough match as Monash played one player down and most of the opposition were twice the size of the Monash players! However the U14’s played well under pressure, having a few early shots on goal and some great runs down the field by Orrin Huf, Dylan Booth and Emily Preston. Fantastic team work saw Braeden Surrao score just before half time for Monash. The second half was fast and furious with Mornington scoring despite great work from full-back Amar Bhoday and goalkeeper Sam Pigden. The game ended in a 1-1 draw but the speed and skills displayed by both teams made it a great game to watch.
The U10 drew 2-2 with Kew, helped along by Thomas, Dylan and Samuel as assistant coaches.
Mens 1s
The Mens 1s came into this week looking to start a winning streak, but were wary of WestVic, who sat higher on the ladder than the farmers. The game started as a slog and stayed that way for much of the match, with midfield pressure and solid defence put on display for both sides. The sole goal of the first half came when Jimmy Morrow slotted a penalty corner flick. The midfield trio of Vish Patel, Jack Frantz and 2s graduate Ryan Pettit were standouts for the side, as Monash held firm in the second half to finish the game 1-0 winners.
Mens 2s
A close one for the Mens 2s, who went down 3-2 to a visiting WestVic side. Goals went to Marty Fielke and Jayson Hammond but they weren’t enough to prevent the loss. A fierce game for both teams, tempers flared and a number of cards were given out. The 2s will look to bounce back in Bendigo on Saturday
Womens 1s
After the arduous drive to Geelong and a coach that got called to work the Vic league 1 girls knew they had a tough match in front of them. The first half didn’t go to plan for the Monash 1s and at half time it was 3-0 down. A regroup from the girls then allowed them to go back to playing their own game and play some good hockey. Unfortunately the final score was 4-0 but the girls are very excited to show Geelong what they are made of next time they meet at our home ground.
Womens 2s
In the 2’s the girls also faced off against Geelong at their home ground. A tough match saw our Vic League 2 girls go down 5-0.
Mens 3s
Monash 3s had another tough loss, going down to a visiting Knox side 8-0.
Mens 4s
The 4s played Kew and again struggled to match it with a more experienced side. At time we didn’t defend as well as we could and had Dan Griemink to again thank for not letting the score get out of control. Will Duudy, Venn King and Rob Sutton again put in a strong shift in defence. Bikram Singh continues to show improvement and some of his delivery out of the backline was excellent. Veterans and Snickers old boys Peter Taylor and Dom Barr were terrific in the midfield and the forward line. While our new and young players continue to develop and improve we will continue to struggle with the score line but hopefully stronger performances are only around the corner.
Womens 3s
The girls came out fighting this week and really showed Powerhouse/ St Kilda what they are made of. After slotting 5 goals into the net and only allowing the opposition to get one in, the Monash girls took the rounds 4 points.
Womens 4s
A 5-1 win from Monash’s Metro B girls in round 5 against Mornington Peninsula. The girls showed their tenacity and position within the division. Currently sitting 3rd on the ladder.
Womens Masters A
The team lost 3-1 to Camberwell (2nd on the ladder). A fast and furious game with plenty of attacking and defending by both teams. We had our chances but Camberwell stacked their backline in the second half making it hard to penetrate effectively. They were the superior team on the night scoring 3 strong goals before Brooke slotted one in for Monash; the first goal scored against Camberwell this season.
Womens Masters B
Monash put up a mighty effort finally going down 1-0 down to top placed Southern United. There were many great defensive “saves” by Shelly in goals and our backs. Monash had a couple of 1-on-1 opportunities into the D with great team work passing the centre in what would have been the slowest water filled turf at Monash!
Mens Masters BNW
The Mens Masters side played away against Powerhouse/St Kilda, losing 7-0
Mens Masters BSE
Monash notched their first win of the season in the BSE division, beating MCC 3-0
