Round 12 saw some close games for Monash Hockey Club, with some hoping to cause controversy with top teams and others getting the full exposure to Melbourne winter weather. One game was rescheduled, another called off with minutes still on the board and one team dominated a game, winning 8-0.
Mens 1s
In the firsts, Monash battled against an undefeated PEGS side, hoping to grab some points and close the gap at the top of the table. A stout defence led by Trent Bussell and his trusty and inconspicuous sidekick Marty Dowman played well throughout the game, aided by the return of Senny Surendran. It unfortunately wasn’t enough to topple a very strong opposition side, who converted three penalty corner flicks to take the game 3-0.
Mens 2s
It was a similar story in the reserves, as the boys weathered the Antarctic Vortex to no avail. Monash had a significant chunk of the play, with great build up and passing putting PEGS under the pump for much of the match, but they couldn’t convert their opportunities. Justin ‘Yuki’ Boutchard had a standout game, even though he was likely still above the legal limit, while the return of Damien McArthur and Ivan Britto boosted the team both in the locker room and on the field. Some key turnovers proved to be the difference between the two sides, as PEGS converted their rare opportunities and eventually ran away with the win.
Womens 1s
The Monash 1s team made the journey to the Monash Peninsula campus, ready to meet with Peninsula Hockey Club again, knowing they were in for a cold and wet game. After the outcome of the 2s game, the umpires decided the weather won that day and the game was called off to be postponed due to an unplayable field and dangerous conditions.
Womens 2s
The Monash 2s, were excited to face Peninsula Hockey Club again, coming off a win against them from the week before. Knowing they would come out strong and had the advantage of playing on their home ground, the girls weren’t going to let that get the better of them. The game was a difficult one, with the weather flooding the field. Ball movement was slow and skills were hard to pull off with the conditions of the field. The game was eventually called off with around 20 minutes of play left, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The goal went to Kate Gibson.
Mens 3s
The mens 3rds team, knew they had a tough game against them this week, facing Waverly who are currently sitting 2nd on the ladder. Holding their heads high throughout the whole game, the final results saw Monash go down 8-0.
Mens 4s
A close match this week for the mens 4s, facing Knox who sit only points ahead of Monash on the ladder. Showing that they are an equally matched team, Monash managed to keep the game at 1-1.
Womens 3s
The Fighting Tambourines once again have shown just how far they have come defeating Swinburne a whooping 8-0. A great team effort was apparent on the day, resulting in a well deserved win. Goals went to; Jasmine Sylivris (3), Whintey Sylivris, Emma Lightbody (2), Edwina Fry and Valerie Bell. This positions our girls 4th on the ladder, definite final contenders.
Womens 4s
The Legion of Boom came had a close game against Mentone Hockey Club, but were unable to match their final goal. Kim Johson put one goal in the net, the final result was 2-1.
